‘Breathing Light’ (2013) by James Turrell, Resnick Pavilion, LACMA, Los Angeles

In the first part of this series, ‘The Treasure Buried at Home’, I followed the journey from a seven-year-old’s intuition about God’s dream, through decades of seeking, to that pivotal moment with Francis Lucille – the recognition of the quiet, causeless joy that is the very nature of yourself. Now I turn to explore what this understanding reveals about the very nature of being itself, and how it transforms your relationship with what you call ‘God’. You’ll discover that the happiness you seek is not something to be found, but the very essence of what you are, and that your being is not separate from the divine, but is God’s own intimate presence shining as your very self.

The Essence of Non-Duality

If we were to distil the essence of all the great religious and spiritual teachings into a single sentence, it might read something like this: the nature of your being is happiness itself, and you share your being with everyone and everything.

Let us start with the first of these two recognitions: happiness is the nature of your being. If happiness is the very nature of your being, and your being is obviously always present in your experience, you may wonder why its innate peace and joy are not always felt. The reason is that whilst you undoubtedly know your own being or self, you may not always know your self or being clearly.
